Melt butter in a large heavy-based pot.

Add sugar and milk; stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Add condensed milk and bring to a boil.

Simmer steadily for about 20-25 minutes, stirring constantly (essential!), until the mixture turns a dark golden color and reaches the soft-ball stage (approx 120°C).

Remove from heat and beat vigorously with a wooden spoon or electric hand whisk for 5-10 minutes until it feels grainy and starts to set.

Pour into a shallow greased tin and let it set partially before marking into squares.

Allow to cool completely until brittle and crumbly.
