Instructions

Mix flour and baking powder, then rub in butter and lard until crumbly.

Stir in sugar, a large handful of raisins, and candied orange peel.

Add a beaten egg and a splash of milk to form a very stiff dough.

Divide into large balls and flatten slightly on a baking tray to about 10cm wide.

Decorate the top of each to look like a face: use two glacé cherries for eyes and three blanched almonds for teeth.

Bake at 200°C for 15-20 minutes until well-risen and golden brown.
