Your First Kitchen Setup

You don't need 50 gadgets. Here's what actually matters.

Essential Tools (The Big 5)

  1. Chef's knife (20cm) — Your most important tool. Invest here.
  2. Cutting board — Large wooden or plastic. Bigger than you think.
  3. Heavy skillet — Cast iron or stainless steel, 25-30cm
  4. Saucepan — 2-3L with lid for soups, sauces, grains
  5. Sheet pan — For roasting vegetables, baking, everything

Nice to Have

  • Wooden spoons and spatula
  • Tongs (the extension of your hand)
  • Colander
  • Mixing bowls (set of 3)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Can opener

Starter Pantry

  • Olive oil and neutral cooking oil
  • Salt (kosher) and black pepper
  • Garlic, onions
  • Canned tomatoes
  • Rice or pasta
  • Chicken or vegetable broth
  • Soy sauce
  • Vinegar (any kind)
  • Dried herbs (oregano, thyme)
  • Flour and sugar

What You DON'T Need Yet

  • Specialty appliances (bread maker, pasta machine)
  • 20-piece knife set
  • Copper cookware
  • Single-use gadgets (avocado slicer, egg separator)

Start with the basics, learn what you actually use, then upgrade intentionally.
