You don't need 50 gadgets. Here's what actually matters.
Essential Tools (The Big 5)
- Chef's knife (20cm) — Your most important tool. Invest here.
- Cutting board — Large wooden or plastic. Bigger than you think.
- Heavy skillet — Cast iron or stainless steel, 25-30cm
- Saucepan — 2-3L with lid for soups, sauces, grains
- Sheet pan — For roasting vegetables, baking, everything
Nice to Have
- Wooden spoons and spatula
- Tongs (the extension of your hand)
- Colander
- Mixing bowls (set of 3)
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Vegetable peeler
- Can opener
Starter Pantry
- Olive oil and neutral cooking oil
- Salt (kosher) and black pepper
- Garlic, onions
- Canned tomatoes
- Rice or pasta
- Chicken or vegetable broth
- Soy sauce
- Vinegar (any kind)
- Dried herbs (oregano, thyme)
- Flour and sugar
What You DON'T Need Yet
- Specialty appliances (bread maker, pasta machine)
- 20-piece knife set
- Copper cookware
- Single-use gadgets (avocado slicer, egg separator)
